What Causes Swelling And Redness In The Toes?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: The toes on my left foot are red at the ends and swollen. I do not have much feeling in the toes due to a spinal cord injury 20 years ago, which left that foot and leg with areas of non-sensation. But I did notice the second toes feeling strange, and upon inspection I see the obvious redness and swelling. They XXXXXXX this way for a week. I live in a remote area, and health care is somewhat lacking. Any advice?

Brief Answer:
Keep the legs above body level for a couple of days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Swelling and redness in toes mostly indicates impaired blood flow to the distal parts of the legs.

Peripheral arteritis (atherosclerosis), deep veins thrombosis, and impaired blood flow due to peripheral nervous system incompetency, may be the conditions that may cause such symptoms.

It is necessary to rest and to keep your feet above the body level with pillows for example, in order to improve blood circulation.

If the redness, swelling gets worse, or doesn't improve in few days, it is necessary to get evaluated by your primary care Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
