What Causes Swelling Around Incision After Lumbar Fusion Surgery While Treating Flu?

Question: I had a lumbar fusion surgery 6 weeks ago and it has gone extremely well to this point. Yesterday afternoon I got the flu and was in bed for about 16 hours and when I was finally able to move around again I noticed that the incision from my surgery was swelling slightly and very sensitive and tender. This has not happened prior to this, is this something to worry about?

Brief Answer:
Infection needs to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I understand your concerns. In the current scenario,it appears that the site of incision might have got infected.
I suggest you to get it examined by the treating surgeon,on priority basis. You may need antibiotic therapy.

Swelling and tenderness indicates infective process.

If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
