What Causes Swelling In Legs And Thighs?
Question: My Mother is suffering from swelling in legs and thighs since last 2-3 months. The swelling increases if she maintains same posture for long hours like sitting, walking or lying down continuously. On doing certain research, it could correlate this to Edema. Not sure if she is suffering from that. Have done some tests and all the reports are normal. No thyroid etc. Cholestrol is on a higher side. Special point to be noted is that she has high BP and she has been taking a medicine Amtas to control it. I have read that Amtas has certain calcium channel blockers which could lead to this. Any inputs from your side will be highly appreciable
Brief Answer:
It could have been caused by Amtas
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Yes it seems like edema and Amtas does cause ankle edema and edema in legs. But development of edema does not mean that we discontinue the medicine. It is very harmless side effect of the medicine. If amtas is controlling blood pressure well, it can be continued.
That said, I would also like to rule out other causes of ankle edema. Thus I would suggest routine blood tests that include liver function tests, kidney function tests, complete blood count, serum electrolytes, lipid profile, etc. I would also like to get an ECG done for her. I am not sure which tests you have done.
Hope it helps.
