Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: Hi Dr Grief, My Dad has just recently bean taking Eliquis & he's experienced tremendous swelling in his feet & lower legs. His Cardiologist put him on extra lasix & then his Urologist put him a supercharged lasix pill. The swelling has gone down but now he has excruciating pain in his legs and abscesses that have broken out.. He's 91 & has a pacemaker. It's killing me that's he's in so much discomfort. He's stopped taking the supercharged lasix but is still having tremendous pain. He is still taking the Eliquis.

Brief Answer:
Diabetes&other pathologies as causes to abscesses.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is Dr.Albana here to assist you regarding your dad's health problems.

The very first thing is to understand why he is having leg pain and what has caused abscess?

Diabetes is one of the metabolic diseases to be ruled out. I advise to run diabetes testing:
- fasting blood sugar
- oral glucose tolerance test
- HbA1C test

Next, his kidney function should be tested too through kidney function tests and abdominal ultrasound.

Local trauma and arthritis issues should be ruled out too through arthritis testing and local examination. Deep veins of the legs should be also examined through Doppler-ultrasound to rule out deep vein thrombosis.

I am sorry he is going through such pain, however, there are many other pain-relief drugs apart Oxycodin to be considered.

Special treatment of abscesses are advise through oral antibiotics. Local treatment through :
- cleaning of the wounds
- applying local antibiotics
- surgical treatment

should be also considered. A further consultation with surgeon is needed for surgical treatment of abscesses.

Wish fast recovery!

He had the Dopler testing & there was good circulation to the lower leg & feet. His kiney function was 47% which is urologist was happy with considering his age & heart condition. We r in Canada so we measure blood sugar different but is last sugar reading was 7 which is acceptable given his age.

Brief Answer:
More potent opioid; Morphine advised to use...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Ok, then, I see his situation is quite delicate and complicated. However, I still advise to use other pain-relief drugs if Oxycontin alone is not working.

Combination of pain-relief drugs with anxiolytic agents have shown good results in some of my patients. You can discuss this further with his doctor.

In some severe cases, a more potent analgesic (e.g. opioid-Morphine) should also be considered.

Wish fast recovery!
