What Causes Swelling In Right Arm While Wearing Brace For Broken Humerus?

Question: My mother in law, XXXXXXX has significant "swelling" in her right hand. She had a brace fitted on her upper right arm after a reduction for a broken humerus one week ago. Her upper right arm was swollen when the brace was fitted so apparently the fluid was forced down to her forearm and hand. Her hand looks a little like you took a surgical glove and blew some air into it. XXXXXXX says it feels like the brace is getting tighter. She is 87 years old and taking Coumadin. She is very frightened and crying. My wife has placed plastic bags with ice on either side of her hand. The ice does not seem to be reducing the "swelling".

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. There may be two reasons for such swelling.
1. Tight brace- She can get her brace checked and loosen it. You can discuss with your doctor about it.
2. second possibility though less likely is keeping forearm and hand hanging (lowered). It can be kept well supported in arm pouch sling and not hanging.
Active finger movement will reduce swelling.
