What Causes Swelling In The Leg While Having Deep Vein Thrombosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I had a DVT in 2005. After 15 months on cumindin, I was cleared by my doctor. I never noticed but a friend pointed out the other day that that leg is slightly larger than the other. I suspect it has been that way since 2005. I have no pain or issues with the larger leg and live an active (walking, golf, etc.) and normalize. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
this can as a side effect of a deep vein thrombosis

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

In the legs there are 2 layers of veins that carry blood back to the heart.

The superficial veins that lie close under the skin and the deep veins, where you had the clot.
The superficial and deep veins are connected , the superficial veins drain into the deep veins.
There are valves that connect the superficial veins and the deep veins so the blood only flows in one direction.

After a clot occurs, the valves may not work as well as previously so there is a back up of blood or it does not flow back to the heart as well.

This can cause the leg to be slightly larger than the unaffected side where there is no problem with blood flow

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
