What Causes Swelling In The Legs While On Amlodipine?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would explain that leg swelling is a known adverse effect of Amlodipine.
But before concluding that your complains are only caused by Amlopidine, it is important to exclude other possible causes like heart failure, chronic venous insufficiency, diabetes, electrolyte imbalance or kidney dysfunction, which can mimic this clinical scenario.
For this reason, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical exam and some tests to investigate for the possible underlying causes:
- a resting ECG and a cardiac ultrasound
- a Doppler ultrasound of the leg vessels
- complete blood count
- fasting glucose
- blood electrolytes
- kidney and liver function tests.
If all the above tests result normal, you should consider Amlodipine as the main cause of your complains. In such case you should discuss with your attending physician on the possibility of switching from Amlodipine to another anti-hypertensive drug like Hydroclorothyazide or ACEI (Ramipril, Enalapril, etc.).
Hope to have been helpful!
Wishing good health,
Dr. Iliri
