What Causes Swelling In The Lower Part Of Left Leg With Numbness?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2016
Question: Gradually since the middle of the summer, my lower leg, especially my left lower leg, is very swollen almost all day. Most recently the bottoms f my feet get numb or tingly. I had a series of blood tests done 9/6/16. The hemoglobin A1C is 6.0 which as I understand is consistent with prediabetes.
Can you recommend what my next step should be?
I have not discussed this with my P.C. I accessed my blood test results online. My P.C.'s office is supposed to call me to set up an appointment.

Brief Answer:
TESTS

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to learn about your bothersome symptoms. When your PC office calls you please inform them of your leg pain and see if they wish to order an ultrasound if the leg to rule out a condition called DVT. Sometimes electrolyte imbalance can cause such pain as can vitamin D deficiency and thyroid problems.Regarding pre diabetes you are clearly doing the right things to keep it in check. See a dietitian in-person and check with your PC or cardiologist which type of exercises are safe for you. When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your last 3 months' glucose average). Also known by other names such as GlycoHemoglobin or Glycated Hemoglobin or A1c
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH (checks your thyroid)                                                                                   12 hour Fasting Lipid profile
25 hydroxy Vitamin D   levels   (ideal range 40 to 60 ng/ml =  100 to 150 nmol/liter)
