What Causes Swelling In Uterus Along With Painful Urination?

default
Posted on Sat, 25 Apr 2015
Question: I have an appointment next week to have a partial our complete hysterectomy. I will be 73 yrs old in a month. I have wanted to leave my ovaries intact, but somewhere I read that at this age no one needs the hormones. I actually have a prolapsed uterus, and I cannot empty my bladder unless I push up with TPaper. My uterus swells up so large that it is painful to pee. I've considered the pessary (sp), but
that requires returning every so often to have it cleaned - not interested in that. When I am hormonal, which is every few days, I swell up, and my brain doesn't work at all. I'm so confused as to what I want done.

Brief Answer:
uterovaginal prolapse+ cystocele + post menopausal status

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks of rte query to HCM for an opinion.
At 73 years of age, you are already menopausal and ovaries have already stopped producing hormones. With the advent of complete uterovaginal prolapse with possible systole( bladder prolapse causing difficulty in urination), the mode of treatment should be total vaginal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ophorectomy with anterior colporrhaphy ( bladder prolapse repair).
There is no need to protect ovaries now as they are not functional and chances of ovarian cancers developing invariably increases with age if there has been a positive family history.
If the post menopausal symptoms like hot flushes are not so strong then you can easily manage yourself with life style modifications as you may have been doing it so far or else mild HRT may be opted for in consultation with your physician if the hot flushes or mood swings , blank episodes are difficult to handle.
But in any case uterus tubes and ovaries all should be removed along with bladder repair, this shall free you of your urinary problem.
Regards
