What Causes Swelling Of Painful Feet?
Question: I am 77. This problem came on very suddenly. At first it felt as though there was swelling of the ball of the foot, just where the ball connects with the toes, but there was no actual swelling. Now, when I wake in the morning, the whole soles of my feet are painful; they feel tight and almost as if the muscles are in spasm.
What could be the cause(s)?
Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Based on the description of your problem I suspect you to have Osteoarthritis. It is an age related degenerative joint condition presenting with pain in smaller joints in the beginning and spreading to the bigger ones.
This can be confirmed by getting Xrays of the effected feet. Also you may have to get blood tests like C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and Rheumatoid factor (RF) factor.
Consult an Orthopedician with the above test reports. Based on the test readings and examination findings, treatment for the joint disease can be formulated.
Wish you good health.

I neglected to say that the pain is just when I wake up and lasts just until
I get up and start walking. There is no pain for the rest of the day, although
the slightly swollen sensation just where balls of feet meet toes remains.
Also, by "sudden onset," I mean that there was no gradual onset of either of
these two symptoms; the swollen feeling came first, rather suddenly, and then the morning pain, just as unexpectedly.
Might this alter the diagnosis?
