What Causes Swelling Of The Testis After Hernia Surgery?

Question: I had ingunial hernia repair surgery on right side almost 6-7 months back. Post surgery, my right testical had swollen and doc told me that it's normal and the swelling will subside after some time. The swelling did reduced but after a few months my right testical shrunk in size to almost a third in normal size. I didn't bother much as I didn't had any pain or discomfort or sexual disfunction. But I just ready about teatical perfusion and got a little worried. Do I need to see a doctor and do anything about it?

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have undergone surgery for hernia repair 6 months back and now has doubt about size of the testis being reduced to 1/3 of it's original size.

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1)Have you done Ultrasound Scanning of Scrotum before surgery and what was the size of testis before surgery?

It is common to get swelling of the testis after hernia surgery due to handling of testis during surgery .Normally it gets reduced to its original size over a period of 2-3 months .

It is likely that the present size of the testis is most likely to be normal size of your testis ..

Please consult qualified General Surgeon and get Ultrasound scanning of the scrotum done to know the size of the both the testicle .It will help you to compare the size of the both the testicles .

Thanks for the reply. The size of both the teaticals was normal before the surgery.Present testis is not of the normal size as I'm comparing it with the left one which wasn't affected during and post surgery. There is marked difference in size of both the testicals and that's what makes me worry. I'll certainly see a surgon as soon as I can but what could be the reason for shrinkage, can it lead to some serious complications and what is the typical treatment for getting this back to normal. Appreciate your reaponse.

Get Ultrasound Scanning done to confirm the size of testicles.

Thanks for follow up.

It could be result of post operative infection of the testicle

However I would suggest to get confirmed regarding the any structural damage to testicle by doing Ultrasound Scanning of the testicle.

The functioning of the particular testis may be normal irrespective of it being small.

It will not lead to any serious complication .and it is unlikely to get back to normal with medicines.
