What Causes Swelling Of The Upper Eyelids?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Mar 2017
Question: My right eyelid (from my eye brow to the bottom of my upper eyelid) suddenly began swelling last night. It progressed until I could barely open my eye. I took some Benadryl, thinking it might be some kind of allergic reaction. When I woke up this morning, the swelling down some, but within the last hour, it has swollen again, almost as badly as last night. The eye is not red or painful, just the swelling of the lid. Should I take more Benadryl or get seen by a doc?

Brief Answer:
Allergy is likely- Benadryl or Cetirizine are good medications for it

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking at HealthcareMagic,

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

It is good you do not feel any pain and have no redness, this rules out the presence of any infection. On the other hand the swelling might be very likely related to the allergic reaction.

Sometimes we can relate it clearly to what might be causing it but many times it is hard to identify the cause of the allergy. If you have noticed that it is related to something (offending agent), it is good to avoid it as the best treatment for allergy is avoiding the cause/triggering factor in the first place.

On the other hand, antihistamines like Benadryl might be helpful to take care of the reaction of the body towards to cause of it. Benadryl is a good medication but during the daytime might cause drowsiness so make sure you are not doing activities that might be affected by taking Benadryl like driving or activities that need balance. Benadryl needs to be taken round the clock 3 times a day to cover you for the whole day.

If you will need to have such activities that are affected by drowsiness than a good substitute to Benadryl is Levocetirizine or Loratadine 10 mg at night before bed time.

Try to not scratch the eye- it would make the local reaction worse. Cold local compresses gently applied on the area might help with the local irritation if it is feeling congested or swollen.

The allergy might take several days to totally clear but meanwhile if you develop redness, pain in the eye or visual changes, then this is not common with allergy. You will need to visit a doctor (preferably Ophthalmologist) in that case for a clinical examination.

I hope this is helpful . Please feel free to write back to me if you need any further clarifications.

Kind regards
