What Causes Swollen Ankles After Taking Cabren For High BP?
I was on vacation recently and was out of plendil 10mg. I got Cabren 10mg and has used it for the last 15 days. I have noticed my right ankles are swollen. Could it be the Cabren causing this as another brand? Could you advise. My blood pressure is good. thanks
Other possible causes should be excluded first.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that felodipine (plendil or cabren, whichever it be), though to a lesser degree than other calcium channel blockers (like amlodipine, lercanidipine, etc) may show limb edema like ankle swelling, etc. as an adverse effect.
This may happen especially when starting the drug or when the dose is increased.
Nevertheless, other possible causes should be excluded as well, before concluding for a possible cabren’s adverse effect.
A systemic venous congestion (by performing a cardiac ultrasound, lower limb venous insufficiency (by Doppler ultrasound), and a local articular inflammation (by medical inspection, X ray study, some lab tests, like complete blood count, PCR, ESR, etc), should be ruled out , before accusing cabren as a responsible cause.
You need to discuss with your prescribing doctor about this issue, to see the possibility of changing to a safer substitute, if this adverse effect persists.
Hope to have been helpful to you!
