What Causes Swollen Feet And Tiny Nails In A New Born Baby?
Question: Hi! Cool site. We just had a baby with swollen feet and tiny nails. Hands are normal. Curious what it could be.
Brief Answer:
it might be normal.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
In most cases, it is normal because of position of baby in the womb. Baby is flooded with amniotic fluid in womb that may be one of the reason.
For better diagnosis I would like to see the photo of the areas involved and the child. If possible can you upload some pictures on this page using the site's uploader located on the right side.
Please get back to me.

Ok - seems after 14 days it should be subsiding - have you seen them go this long being swollen before going to normal size? Great news if so.
I attached two pictures, can you see them?

If your baby otherwise has no fever, is eating well and making lots of wet diapers then you need not worry as many babies have some extra fluid on board at birth and they get rid of it easily.
But to be on safer side i suggest you to go for thyroid level, ECG, karyotyping after discussing with your doctor to rule out hypothyroidism, congestive heart failure, XXXXXXX syndrom respectively.
Milory disease also should be rule out.
Turner's syndrome must always be suspected if there is a congenital lymphoedema of the lower extremities and especially also of the region of neck, low hairline, low set ears.
In hypothyroidism there will be Frequent choking, A large, protruding tongue, A puffy appearance to the face, Constipation.
Oedema can be treated with compression stockings or bandaging and massage after consulting with your doctor.
And finally yes i have seen some cases where there is no obvious reason for edema is seen and you have to wait for 5 to 6 month for more investigations.
Hope it will help you and everything will be normal.
