What Causes Swollen Feet While On Diltiazem Hydrochloride And Atorvastatin?
I had an episode of fast heart beating while under anesthesia and they put me on this medication. How do I know if I really need it?
You need to discuss with your prescribing doctor for safer alternatives.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that your actual complains (feet swelling, headaches, as well as sore throat) seems to be adverse effects of Diltiazem and Atorvastatin, respectively.
Coming to this point, I recommend stopping Diltiazem and discussing with your prescribing physician for a safer alternative (if really is necessary to continue on heart rate controlling therapy; I don’t know exactly whether it was a sinus tachycardia or any arrhythmic events which brought to decision on Diltiazem).
Could you please upload a detailed medical report of what happened during anesthesia (to better judge whether such a therapy is necessary to be continued)?
Regarding Atorvastatin, I would add that generally it is a well-tolerated drug.
Nevertheless, if throat complains are disturbing and persistent, a possible discontinuation is advised (at least temporarily).
Meanwhile, some lab tests, like AST & ALT, CPK are necessary to explore any adverse muscular involvements.
If your blood lipid profile level is seriously disturbing (high abnormality detected), a discussion with your attending doctor about another antilipemiant therapy should be done.
When restarted after a pause, sometimes Atorvastatin doesn’t show those minor adverse effects any more.
Nevertheless, it depends on your doctor’s discretion to make the right decision for you.
Hope to have been helpful!
If you have further uncertainties, do not hesitate to ask me!
Best wishes,
Dr. Iliri
