What Causes Swollen Lymph Node In The Armpit Post An Injury?

Posted on Wed, 17 Aug 2016
Question: Hello; I had a accidental punch to my right breast which caused severe pain and about a week later I noticed a small swelling in a lymph node in that armpit. Also, I have a rotator cuff tear in that arm as well. Could either of theses things cause swelling of the lymph node in the armpit?

Brief Answer:
Both can cause the swelling of the lymph node.

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,

Thank you for writing in with your query.

The blunt trauma to the breast can definitely cause the swelling in the lymph nodes in the armpit as the lymph from the breasts primarily drains into the axillary (armpit) nodes, and the shoulder region also drains into axillary lymph nodes.

It is not surprising or unexpected and is self limiting, so there is no need to worry about the swelling.

Hope this answers your question, if you have any doubts, please do write back to me.

Best regards
