What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Groin Following Cold?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: i recently have a swollen lymph node on the right hand side of my groin area. This is the tenth day upon having it. I went to see a doctor and he tells me my body is fighting some sort of infection. I did have a cold before getting the swollen lymph node. There was some pain that occurred yesterday. I was wondering how long does it take for the swollen lymph node at my groin area to subside?

Brief Answer:
it needs treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.

Usually people dont get lymph nodes in the groin following cold. They usually get in the neck or axilla. However in most cases actively swollen lymph nodes reduce in couple of weeks. Rarely they persist for long time.

In your case as its been ten days and its not subsiding down and is painful, I would suggest that you take a course of antibiotic in consultation with your doctor, to prevent it from turning into an abscess. Also you doctor may examine you to fine out the source of infection.

Hope I have been helpful.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics are not available over the counter.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Antibiotics are prescription only drugs. I can suggest a name which you can discuss with your doctor after you answer few of my questions:
- Is there any wound over your leg or in the private area?
- Are you having any sort of reddness in these areas?
- Are you having any std?

As all these can cause lymph node swelling in the groin.

Brief Answer:
take a broad spectrum antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

In that case, I would start you on any broad spectrum antibiotic like a combination of cefexim and ofloxacin or amoxacillin and clavulinic acid combination. But like I said earlier, all antibiotics are not available over the counter. You can check with your pharmacist if you have these or any other broad spectrum antibiotics over the counter. If you get any one of them take it twice a day for five days.
