What Causes Swollen Tongue While On Geodon?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: I recently was put on new medications by a new psychiatrist a few days ago. This past Saturday morning, I started taking the prescribed generic for Geodon (one 60 mg capsule w Breakfast and one 60 mg capsule w dinner), along with the prescribed generic for Topamax (one 25 mg tab in the morn and one 25 mg tab in the evening). Along w these new pills, I was also taking my usual 125 mcg tab of Synthoid in the morning and my usual 20/25 mg tablet of Lisinopril-HCTZ for high blood pressure. While doing all of this, I was being weaned off of Effexor (one 150 mg ER Capsule) by taking A 7 day supply of Prozac (20 mg capsule).

But yesterday evening (Sunday) around 8 pm, I began to feel my tongue starting to swell slightly and I was talking funny. That went away after a little while but it then came back around 10 pm and I went to the emergency room. The ER Doctors automatically came to the conclusion that the reason for this swelling was due to the to the Lisinopril (bp med) that I had been on for over 6 years! They told me they see this all the time in their ER rooms & that I am to stop taking this med ASAP. My question is what about the new medications that I just began, most notably the Geodon? I had never been on this medication before in my life, whereas I had been on Topamax and Prozac at some point before prior in my life. Does anyone have any advice for me? The ER Doctor and my new psychiatrist both want me to go back on the Geodon in a couple of days and to be honest, I am scared to death to do that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Geodon does not cause this tongue sensation you are describing. As the ER doctors say, lisinopril is far and away the most likely medication to be causing this. I would explore other antihypertensive medications to replace this, such as an ARB medication. Geodon is safe and you should continue to use it as directed by your psychiatrist.
