What Causes Syncope And Whooshing Noise In Head?

Posted on Tue, 8 Mar 2016
Question: Hi My 29year old perfectly healthy son fainted last night for the first time. He was very pale very tacky and I took his blood pressure on home monitor 149/127. He was in no pain just said he felt a whooshing noise in his head which passed quickly. I kept him laid on his side for 10 mins then got him sitting up. I gave him a sweet cup of tea and took his blood pressure again which was normal 127/70 . his colour came back and he said he was fine. He is on no medication and otherwise healthy. I am obviously worried this could happen again and will be taking him to the doctors on Monday for a check up.

Brief Answer:
Some tests are recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Well, regarding these problems, there is always a low suspicion index that something is wrong, in these young ages. Due to various physiological changes, sometimes syncopal episodes (fainting) happen to all healthy people. However, whenever a cardiologist is in front of a patient with a fainting episode, will prescribe further testing, to exclude any organic issue that may cause this event.

EKG - to evaluate the heart conduction and electrical systems, at resting state. This is where initial pathologies may be found, especially in young ages

Echo cardiogram - to evaluate the size and function of the heart valves, chambers and the root of aorta.

Echo Doppler of carotid arteries (neck arteries) - to assess their lumen and patency.

Depending on the resuslts of these initial tests, further tests may be recommended, such as a 24-hour rhythm registration, a consult with a neurologist and an EEG.

The high blood pressure and the paleness has probably been due to the fear and anxiety experienced in the moment.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions. Please rate the answer, if you do not.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
