Posted on Wed, 11 Jan 2017
Question: My husband, who has ms (for almost 50 years) has very thick brownish mucus coming out of his urinary tract...not all the time, but twice in the last week. This is not the usual symptom for an infection, but I don't know what is causing it.

Brief Answer:
Can still be urinary tract infection. Needs to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

Even if mucus is not common in the urinary tract as a sign of urinary tract infection, we still need to make sure to rule it out as a possible diagnoses. Also we need to rule out sexually transmitted infections and a fungal infection. In males the sexually transmitted infections do not give symptoms but sometimes can be possible.

So my recommendations would be :
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Consider doing a urine analyse
- Consider doing tests to rule out a fungal infection.
- If you are a couple that trust each other and there is no risk for sexually transmitted infections then its ok not to do them but otherwise I would recommend them.

Hope this is helpful. These are my thoughts.
