Brief Answer:
It can be most likely repetitive stress injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. From your description it is most likely repetitive stress injury to suboccipital muscles.
Tension on these muscles can occur due to wrong posture while sleeping. This can pain or head ache after getting up.
Avoid high pillows. Using orthopedic pillows will be better. You can also do exercises for neck. Appying NSAID gels like diclofenac locally also is good.
You can also apply ice packs or hot water bag on and off on the area.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
