Question: My husband is a type 2diabetic and has high blood pressure (irregular). Lately for the pass 2 weeks he has been having this throbbing pain at his left eye. Like the pain would tighten and grip then let go and go away. What could be causing it and what test would need to be done. Does he need to go to the hospital.

Brief Answer:
Eye pain causes in a diabetic hypertensive patient

Detailed Answer:
Hi Lovestar29, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Your husband is suffering from diabetes mellitus, hypertension and he is having severe throbbing pain in his left eye for 2 weeks. Both diabetes and hypertension can cause serious eye problems which can cause throbbing eye pain. The examples are

- Glaucoma - It can cause severe eye pain, throbbing type, more during sunlight, can involve forehead and also manifests as flashes. It can cause vision loss.

- Eye infection like conjunctivitis, scleritis, orbital apex syndrome - All these conditions can cause severe eye pain. Orbital apex syndrome can cause vision loss and damage to eye movement.

- Cataract and poor visual acuity - Cataract is as such painless disease. But straining in vision can cause headache and eye pain due to eye muscle spasm. Diabetic and hypertensive patients have early age onset of cataract.

My advise is to consult ophthalmologist. Get his eye examined to rule out above mentioned illness. few investigations which can confirm diagnosis are

- Visual acuity testing
- Eye lens and retina examination
- Intra-occular pressure monitoring
- If doubt, MRI of orbit to find out retrobulbar pathology

Hope it will help you. If you have nay doubts, do let me know. And please send me his reports, I will guide you further.
Thanks. Take care.
