What Causes Tightened Upper Abdominal Muscles After Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hello,
About a month ago I was in a fight and took two hard blows to the upper abdomen. Within a few days afterwords I noticed a strange uncontrollable tightening my my upper abdominal muscles. Within a few days that tightening was also accompanied by pain and tenderness in my xiphoid process area. about the same time I also noticed what use to be a small lump in that area increased in size and was very tender to the touch. As I am 50 years old and understand the xiphoid process hardens with age, does this sound typical to fracture??? Note the pain comes and goes in intensity from 1-6 pain level more recently gets better as the day progress (worse in the morning). This has been going on for about 5-weeks now. I am 5'11" weight about 160 lbs. No fever or digestive problems that I can tell. Some times the pain does radiate outward on both sides. Thanks for any advise... XXXX

Brief Answer:
Post-traumatic Xyphoidalgia

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,Good Evening from XXXXXXX Thanks for the query to HCM.
-I studied the elucidative brief up of your query facts and understood your concnerns.
@After review of the query facts my opinion and advise on health tips for you are as follows-
a-Two hard blows have fractured the brittle hard xyphoid bone -which is causing this xyphoidalgia.I would advise the Xray Chest ap/ oblique to study the xyphoid fracture, which would relieve your worry for it.
b-The post-traumatic myositis-after the hard blow-lead to the uncontrolled -RIGIDITY -which is autonomic response to the injured abdominal muscsles
c-The rigidity and the pain level has been getting better with the time over last 5 weeks ,with worst pain spells in the morning due to Rigidity of the muscles.
d-There is no intra-abdominal trauma as there are no digestive problems over last 5 wks time.
e-Radiating ourward pain on both sides -is due to the entrapment nueralgic pain-of intercostal -nerves entrapped in the fractured xyphoid flapping segments
-Remedy advised-
@Till the time more info on X-ray of the Xyphoid area of the chest is recieved-plz follow these health tips-scurpulously-
a-Hot fomentation by Infrared light therapy for the pain relief of the tissue and nerves
b-Inj-Kenacort-locally if the Xyphoidalgia persists-could be tried
Wellcome for any further query in this regard and would love to help you till you are satisfied.

Wishing you fast recovery.
@Await your X-ray report for the Xyphoid fracture, after specific advanced treatments would be advised to you.

Thanks for the informative response. I am an office worker that is not required to do much daily physical activity. In that, how long on average does this condition take to heal by itself? Also about when should I resume light exercise such as light stretching & cardio? Thanks again... XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Xiphoidalgia with ? Xiphoid fracture- with nerve entrapment pain sometimes

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,Good Evening and Thanks for the interactive query expressing concerns about it.
@My current impression of your case is -
Xiphoidalgia with ? Xiphoid fracture- with nerve entrapment pain sometimes
@Follwoing comments to brief up the health tips -to suit your needs as expressed in this query.
a-As even after 5 wks you have -entrapped intercostal nerve pain radiation is present, I would advise you to take rest for atleast 3 wks more,
b-I would advise Vit D3 with Calcium till 3 wks,
c-For the medical fittness to join the job-I would leave it after 3 wks follow-up by which time ,Check X-ray would confirm your joining the job, though its with much less physical activity and the extended rest is -due ot the ?Xiphoid fracture, which would take time due to the respiratory movements.
d-Rib Belt or braces with upper abdominal braces-would help you to have fast recovery -as desired by you.
e-I await your X-ray Chest with Xiphoid Ap/Lat/ Oblique views which would fix the fracture of Xiphoid process.
f-Cardio and light strething would not be allowed till 3 mth atleast due to the above limitations of your case.
Revert after 2 wks for review of your case at HCM by direct private query.
Hope this resolves your issues with your health ailment.
Write strong reccomendations without fail ASAP.
Good Night from XXXXXXX
