Brief Answer:
mainly pain is an indication something is wrong

Detailed Answer:
for that matter so is getting a trach. Any condition that leads to having a trach is quite serious and involves the lungs. Lung irritation would cause pain, and tightness. Mostly.. it is from "REVERSIBLE airway disease" --while this is a technical name for asthma, it also indicates that the inflammatory process when it is treated with anti-inflammatories, lets up the problems (steroids--generally inhaled steroids, or monteleukast).
Steroids also lower the inflammation that causes pain.
