What Causes Tightness Sensation In The Stomach After Taking Pantoprazole?

Question: My doctor has put me on pantoprazole 40 mg once in the morning and before supper. I notice that my stomach feels like it gets tight especially after I eat. What is causing that or is this some kind of side affect?

It might be important to be sure that the symptoms you are experiencing were not there before you started taking this medication.

Pantoprazole for sure has many abdominal side effects, at times including those you just described. However, the intensity of these side effects are a function of factors like when the drug is taken. It is important to note that it is advisable to take proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole 30 minutes after meals. If you have been taking the drug 30 minutes after meals , its fine, if not, I advice you start taking it 30 minutes after meals for a couple of days.

Avoiding spicy foods is also important. In case symptoms persist despite these changes for up to a week, it might be necessary to consult your doctor to prescribe an alternative medication.
