What Causes Transient Shortness Of Breath When Diagnosed With Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Question: Are there any known pulmonary complications after iron infusions? I developed shortness of breath after infusions but it has continued for some time. All they have found was a reduced DLCO on PFTs. My hematologist had said that pulmonary fibrosis is a very rare complication but I have not been able to find any research about it.
Brief Answer:
Very unlikely
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Transient shortness of breath happens sometimes after iron infusion but pulmonary fibrosis is extremely rare. We administer many iron infusions but have not come across any such patient.
Probably the fibrosis was ongoing, due to some other reason, or even idiopathic, ie cause unknown. Iron therapy was coincidental and caused more shortness of breath because of underlying lung condition.
Hope this helps.

Pulmonary fibrosis was not seen on CT scan. Just reduced DLCO on pulmonary function test. I had just been warned it was a very rare possible complication.
But aside from that what could cause transient shortness of breath after iron infusions? I never had any breathing issues prior to iron infusions.

Brief Answer:
iron injections can cause
Detailed Answer:
Iron preparations can themselves cause this type of allergic reaction during infusions. They resolve spontaneously or with anti-allergic treatment.
Permanent reduction of DLCO is not a feature of iron toxicity.
