What Causes Unilateral Pain And Tightness In The Body?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: I have a sharp pain on the left side of my body. The pain is from my left armpit to my left hand. It feels like the source of the pain is from a vein in my body. When I extend my arm I feel tightness and a sharp pain. Any idea what this might be?

Brief Answer:
Seems like nerve pain, or some muscle sprain

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it seems more likely to be nerve pain. Radiation of pain makes it more likely. Usually these can arise due to postural abnormality or compression of nerve through its course.

Most of the times it resolves spontaneously but OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be used alongwith gaba pentins or duloxetine after discussing with your primary physician. A muscle sprain can be another possibility so a carefully examination can discriminate between the two.

Muscle relaxants like orphenidrine or tizanidine may also be needed. Avoid lifting heavy weights through the affected arm and give it rest as much as you can apart from the excercises recommended or advised by a physiotherapist.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

Thank you for your helpful response. I would also like to add that the pain goes through my hand and there is a blister in my palm where the pain ends. I was very nervous that this was signs of it being a stroke. Do you think there is a chance that I have experienced a stroke?

Brief Answer:
Doesn't appear to be a stroke

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for sharing your feedback.

Based on details you gave, chances of stroke are least likely however that Blister or rash can be due to viral lesion which can also affect nerve tissue which can cause such pains. Keeping your history in mind though it is less likely to be the cause. However, Kindly get that examined by your GP or primary physician and discuss to rule out any possibility of their association or any signs on examination.

Regards.
