Question: My 3 year old had a 103 temp the last two nights but has been fine during the day. Today he has seemed fine until right before dinner he fell asleep and now has a body temp of 95.5. He's responding to me if I try to wake him, but going right back to sleep. He does not want to be awake. Is this concerning?

Brief Answer:
I would like to get him evaluated by a physician

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I would like to get him clinically evaluated by a physician if drowsiness persists.I am not much concerned about the low temperature as symptoms of hypothermia develop below 95 F.The drowsiness is more worrisome.I would like to know the current medication as the low temperature may be due to the effect of antipyratic.

The common causes of high grade fever in this age is some viral infection, may be upper respiratory infection(cold/cough) or intestinal infection(loose stool).During initial 24-48 hours fever may be the only symptom and cough/cold or loose stool may develop later on.
In your case there was high grade fever but even after 48 hours there are no localising signs(like cold or loose stool or any other abnormal symptoms).

There may be two possibilities
first--- he is in deep sleep and difficult to arouse.

Second--- although chances are less but he may have some brain infection which has led to this drowsiness(even hypothermia can occur in brain infection).

It is very difficult to say whether this drowsiness is due to deep sleep or some abnormality(as you said he was absolutely normal before going to sleep).

So I suggest you to observe the baby and if this drowsiness persists or temperature falls further get him evaluated by a physician.

I shall be glad to answer if you have any more query.
Regards
