What Causes Unusual Weight Gain And Sickness After Having Food?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: I have recently (3 month period) gained over 10 pounds without any change to my diet or daily routine. The weight gain will hold for a few days and then the next I will weight 1.5 to 3 pounds more. The scale doesn't go back down. Most recently (within the past week or 2 and getting worse) I feel sick after I eat. It doesn't matter what I eat. Also feels like acid reflux only if I bend over. My bathroom habits are unchanged. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
It needs to be evaluated further.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
I have read your query and understand the concerns.

This type of unexplained weight gain is not likely to be abnormal but it needs to be evaluated further. However you do not need to worry here but to clear remaining doubt I would suggest you some tests.

First,go for complete haemogram and thyroid function tests with abdominal ultrasound.

As you feel sick or not good after eating and considering your acid reflux,I would like to know do you have any gastrointestinal symptoms since 4 to 5 months?

If so,then I would suggest you to take proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole 40) with antacid gel (digene) with meal which may help to subside your reflux symptoms.

If problem persists then you can go for upper GI endoscopy to rule out gastritis or any peptic ulcer but at present there is not much to bother.

Every medical investigations must be co-related clinically by the doctor to confirm any diagnosis. We will be able to say exactly only after this tests results.

Hope this will help you and if any you need clarification further then feel free to ask me.

Regards,

I thought about a thyroid issue but my energy level is the same. I said 10 pound but re-evaluated and realized is is closer to 15 pounds. What could cause this (to me) rapid weight gain when my lifestyle has not changed? Diet and exercise us the same. One more thing i forgot to mention is I'm not sweat it like I used to. It is minimal at best when circumstances would warrant visible sweating. Also what is the easiest way to release water retention?

Brief Answer:
Needs further evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the follow-up.

As I said earlier, your unexplained weight gain since 4 to 5 months needs various tests mentioned previously to identify the reason. I would not be able to identify the cause rightly without test results. I will suggest you go through it as and when feasible.

Thyroid dysfunctions sometime can be subtle. At times there are no symptoms despite low thyroid level. So let's not exclude thyroid out of question right away.

I would wait until you are evaluated in detail to check whether or not lack of sweating is related. It may or not be related to rapid weight gain.

Diuretic is used in cases where there is fluid retention (edematous collection). It doesn't play significant role in case of non edematous collection. Your doctor will be able to differentiate it after physical examination.
