What Causes Upper Thigh Pain While Sitting And Standing From A Seated Position?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Nov 2016
Question: I am a 59 yo woman having severe pain in my anterior upper thigh. It comes on immediately after I sit down or arise from being seated for several minutes then goes away and remains gone until I get up ( or sit down) respectively at which time it is again severe for several minutes and then goes away. I have no pain at all as long as I am up and walking around or in bed at night. I can participate in my dance class with no pain at all. No recent trauma but I have been helping my son move into his apartment for college

Brief Answer:
seems to be muscular pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

How was your day?

Hope this message finds you in good health.

I have gone through your query in detail and understand your concern.

from the symptoms that you have mentioned, the pain seems to be arising from the anterior thigh muscles, quadriceps muscle...to be specific.

this muscle is used more while sitting and getting up from a seated position. this must have occured due to some muscle strain during the work that you have been doing ( helping your son move into his apartment for college )

more than just analgesics, you need anti inflammatory muscle relaxants . apply local analgesic gel. ice packs and a compression bandage while ambulating would be useful. try avoiding climbing stairs and sitting cross legged or squatting.

you should be fine in a few days.

I hope your question has been answered.

Feel free to consult me anytime for follow-up queries.

Take care,God bless.
Wish you a healthy life : )

As I noted in my original question- I have no pain at all with activity - including using the stairmaster as well as the three dance classes I take which include jumping, leg lifts, stretches, and balancing on the ball of my right foot. The pain is only related to the CHANGE of position from sitting to standing or from standing to sitting. It cannot be brought on by any motion or isometric ( resisted) maneuver.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back

any pain related to change of position is due to the use of that specific muscle involved. Change of position can be effected only by use of muscles.

in your case, you mentioned that you get pain only from sitting to standing or from standing to sitting. The muscle involved in this particular activity is rectus femoris and iliopsoas. any of these muscles,if inflammed, can cause such kind of pain.

so,i suggest you to take muscle relaxant specific anti inflammatory tablets to get quick relief

I hope your question has been answered.
