Causes vary depending on the age. Prostate enlargement could be one.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXX,
Thank you for your query.
The causes for UTI (Urinary tract infection) in males are usually different in different ages.
In younger ages the main cause is sexual transmission and as the age advances, some form of urinary obstruction is the most important risk factor for developing a UTI in males.
One of the most common obstructive pathology unique to males is the enlargement of the prostate gland.
Prostate enlargement happens usually after 50 years of age, however earlier onset prostatomegally is not uncommon.
Viral infections of the genital tract (Testes, epididymis, prostate) are other risk factors that enable bacterial infection secondarily.
Other important cause/risk factor in males is presence of a urinary catheter.
I hope this answers your question, please feel free to write back to me if you have any doubts.
Wishing you good health.
Warm regards.
