What Causes Urine Retention Post Prostate Removal?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Jun 2015
Question: I had my prostate removed about 7 or 8 years ago. I had at once with frequent night time urination. For the last 2 years, I have had trouble with urine retention. Could this have anything to do with prostrate removal?
I am 77 years old, and in very good health. Flow XXXXXXX is the only medication I take. I walk every morning.

Brief Answer:
urine retention caused by scar tissue

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned that the prior prostate surgery maybe causing your bladder retention and the short answer is yes. The scar tissue around where your prostate used to be would cause narrowing of the urethra. This narrowing can cause difficulty with voiding. The Flomax can be used to help relax the bladder muscles at the base of the bladder but scar tissue will not be affected. So if you are still having persistent difficulty voiding them I would return to a urologist and have them check your urethra for stenosis. If there is stenosis they can dilate the area and your retention problem will be resolved.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact HCM again for your health care concerns or questions.
