What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Taking Postinor?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 May 2014
Question: I had a medical abortion on March 1. On April 1, my doctor told me that I have fully recovered from the procedure. I haven't had my period since then but I have been feeling PMS symptoms for the past couple of days. Two days ago I took Postinor 2 and this morning, I had mild vaginal bleeding. How do you differentiate bleeding as a side effect of Postinor 2 or an actual period ?

DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

1) Above vaginal bleeding is MOSTLY due to withdrawal effect of POSTINOR-2 pill. Withdrawal bleeding occurs following intake of hormonal pill and noticeably lighter to moderate bleeding in comparison to your period.

2) Some general guidelines should be followed to get effective result from current condition:

a) Improvement of general health and simple psychotherapy with explanation of the fact and assurance which helps to relieve mental stress/ upset

b) Bowel should be kept empty. Drink plenty of fluid/ water/ juice. Take healthy diet with more vegetables.

c) Total avoidance of tea/ coffee/ fast food/ salt until you get your period.

d) Try to avoid mental stress, depression or upset by meditation or yoga. Light exercise is also useful in this condition. Maintain genital hygiene properly.

e) If you don't get your period within 1 week, you need to take Progesterone pill to induce period. Kindly, consult with doctor for complete prescription.

Brief Answer:
1 - 2 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query.

Withdrawal effect may last for 1 to 2 weeks or even more (can't be predicted). I suggest you to wait at least 2 weeks and undergo one home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.

On negative test, you can take progesterone pill (like Norethisterone) to induce period. Kindly, consult with your doctor for complete prescription.

Hope, it helps for you. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
