What Causes Vaginal Bleeding Despite Having High HCG Levels?

Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: I had unprotected sex on 15th February(evening) and 16th February multiple times and took an iPill on the morning of 17th February. The date of period was 1st March but I did not get them. I took 2 home pregnancy tests today and both were positive but the lines were not very prominent so went for a blood test. In the meanwhile I get my periods today and I'm bleeding normally. The results for the blood test came out an hour ago and it shows my hCG levels at 44.21 mIU/ml. I am really confused. Am I pregnant? If not then why are my hCG levels this high when they are supposed to be less than 5 mIU/ml to be non-pregnant. And if I am pregnant then why am I having a normal period and what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Most likely nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Either it is a biochemical pregnancy where blood levels rise but the pregnancy dues away sooner than clinical detection or it can be too early to test so let the flow continue in full swing and see the flow and duration of periods.
In case it resembles your normal periods then repeat the pregnancy test after a week which if negative then nothing to worry.
But in case flow or duration of periods is less then visit a gynaecologist for examination.
Take care

Thank you madam. Iwanted to ask another question. I am properly bleeding like I do when my periods start. So is there a possibility that the test came positive because I was pregnant and soon after the blood test I started with my periods, so it is a possibility that it is a threatened abortion?

Brief Answer:
This is called biochemical pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Yes dear you have analysed it aptly and this is what we call a biochemical pregnancy basically.
So don't worry and just wait for a week.
All the best

Last question madam. Its my second day and I'm still bleeding. Bleeding is not profuse but i am bleeding like I normally do. But apart from that i am having severe nausea and palpitations. I'm feeling very tired and unable to work properly as I'm feeling very tired all the time. Has it got something to do with my raised hcg levels or my positive blood test for pregnancy. And also does this miscarriage mean that I might have problems when I want to concieve in the future?

Brief Answer:
Wait for another week

Detailed Answer:
The symptoms you are having can be because of abortion process or deranged periods both so nothing conclusive can be commented at this stage.
But certainly if it is not an ectopic pregnancy then nothing to worry about future conception issues.
So just relax and can discuss anything anytime on this forum, I will be glad to answer.
