What Causes Vaginal Discharge After An Umbilical Hernia Surgery

Question: I had a umbilical hernia surgery on 3rd of December- it is still got a bit of discharge coming out and today it started smelling- when I had a good look it almost looks like there is an open wound- should I be concerned as I have no pain and it's not red at all...
Brief Answer:
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Surgery on 3 rd December, means more than 16 days and by this time they would have healed absolutely well, without any discharge, open wound or smell.
The presence of what looks like an open wound and smell is indicative of an infection.
You should be concerned about it irrespective of no pain and no redness.
I would advise for a inspection and palpation by a Surgeon and proper care with sterile dressing and antibiotics.
Was a mesh put in?
I hope this answer helps you to have further action as suggested ASAP.

Mesh was put in- should I attend hospital straight away??
Brief Answer:
Yes please... to be on a safer side.
Detailed Answer:
Yes, please attend the hospital straight away.
It is always better be more careful and take precautions than feeling sorry later; this extra precaution to be taken as the mesh is in.

In your opinion what do u think the problem is?
Brief Answer:
infected seroma.
Detailed Answer:
This may be a seroma (collection of body fluid) with superadded infection hence the smell and the gaping.
Infection can be a serious problem with mesh in as with infection the mesh acts as a foreign body making infection control a bit difficult.
