Question: Hi,
I am a 53 years old female. I have been diagnosed with arthritis for which I am taking prescribed medicines. But along with arthritis I got some brown colored spots on lower legs (below knees) and the nails of my big toes are discolored turning black. I have been to quite a few specialists including dermatologists but my problem has not been properly diagnosed. Initially these spots were minimal but slowly they started spreading on my lower legs. All my blood tests came out normal but there is calcium and vitamin B deficiency in my body. My orthopaedic prescribed me oral steroids. I took them for about 1 week but discontinued as I was sweating heavily after taking them and was experiencing sleep disorders, aggression and mood swings. Its been two weeks since I discontinued taking them but the symptoms of vaginal itching and sleep disorders are persisting even now. Moreover now if I have any wound or scar that is also becoming itchy. What could be the possible reason of brown spots ans nail discolouration? And do taking steroids causing a change in my body even after discontinuation ? Please help.

Brief Answer:
Fungal infection, side effects of medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Do you have black Pigmentation of your face, arms?

Do you have itching of the spots on the legs?

Do you have back pain ?

Usually development of spots on the skin and nails could be a sign of fungal infection like Tinea. It is advisable to avoid sunlight episode, sweat accumulation. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily.

Kindly list the medications that you are on because some medication can cause Pigmentation as side effects.

If possible please send a photo of the spots and nail problem, for me to be in a better position to help you.

Hi,

Thnks for the reply Sir.

I do not have pigmentation on my face and arms.

I do not have itching on leg spots.

I do not have back pain.

But Doctor these spots started way earlier before taking medicines. Initially these spots were only in certain portions of my legs but slowly they increased all over my lower legs. And moreover its just been one month since i have started taking medicines for my arthritis. I was not on any medication before. I am experiencing mood swings alot these days. Some sleep trouble is also there in the night. For your reference i am hereby attaching my prescription and photos of spots.

Thanks once again. Waiting for your reply.

Brief Answer:
Melanoma nail bed, Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the follow up query.

I have reviewed your photo of your nail.

You need to get this seen by a Dermatologist to rule out Melanoma of the nail bed. It may require biopsy with needle for testing.

Other possible cause could be bacterial or fungal infection.

Kindly follow the precautions I have mentioned earlier and show to a Dermatologist as soon as possible.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
