What Causes Vertical Black Bands On The Thumb?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2016
Question: Hello Doctor, I see some vertical black bands - 3 lighter in shed and one on right thumb is bit darker. (Pictures attached). I never paid any attention - perhaps they are there for an year or so. Got a whatsapp forward, (this could be symptom of Subungual melanoma), so would like to take your opinion. Other details: I am in good health although my food intake rarely includes green vegetables (leafy or otherwise). I mostly have beans, rice, Milk and wheat based food. No tobacco/ liquor consumption. Would appreciate your advise.

Brief Answer:
Looks like longitudinal melanonychia, no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
I am Dr Asmeet Kaur Sawhney, a dermatologist.
I have gone through your complaints as well as reviewed the attached photographs.
There is no need to worry as these are longitudinal melanonychia.
It is a common finding which is quite common in Asians and other darker races though it is also seen in association with certain drugs or hereditary.
It doesn't seem to be associated with subungual melanoma.
Regards
Dr Asmeet
