What Causes Vertigo When Under Stress?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Dec 2014
Question: Hi About 2 months ago, I was under a lot of stress and had my first attack of Vertigo. After the Emergency Room and all test, BP meds and an IV, I went home with a bit of dizziness, but it appeared gone. I was normal, but in the mornings my head sometimes felt light or weak. My mid afternoon I was always normal so I ignored this. About 3 weeks ago I awoke at 4 AM with the bed swimming and it was back. I went to the ER and again, they took all test, but sent me home. The spinning had stopped. So I rested a few days and was back to normal. Within a week, it returned and I went back to the ER and was admitted, treated with Steroids, and stayed in hospital for 5 days. All testing showed only elevated BP. Some meds for that, but I discontinued and came home to rest, change diet. This time however vertigo has not gone away. For the last 3 weeks or so, I'm suffering with the dizziness, and the difficulty balancing. No pain, no virus or cold, no injuries prior. I could write a book on vertigo I've studied everything I can. I'm due for first physical therapy on Thursday and I'll have my 3rd Chiropractor's meeting tomorrow. Hearing test and ear Doc. found nothing wrong either.
I notice that during sleep my left ear began leaking fluid that crystalized in my ear and left a yellow stain on my pillow. The ear does not drain when I'm sitting up on lying on that side. The dizziness isn't going away. There is no nausea or spinning. I have begun using hydrogen peroxide drops and noticed that the bubbling sound is only in the left ear not the right. Also I don't want to take meds, and I eat very well, lots of greens, whole grains, soy, organic fresh fruit and fish and meats rarely.
Please tell me why fluid is draining from my ear and how I might get rid of this vertigo?

Brief Answer:
Detailed ent examination, otoscopy, vestibular tests.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any associated vomiting or ear pain ?

Kindly get back to me with details.

As per your clinical details, it appears to be

1. labrynthitis (inner ear infection)

2. CSF ottorhea -fluid around brain draining through ear due to fistula (complication of ear drum infection.).

I suggest you to consult an ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, otoscopy, and vestibular tests (balance tests), if necessary contrast ct scan. Treatment can be started according to the investigations.

I also advise you not to put hydrogen peroxide drops (no help, can cause ulcers over mucosa).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you Dr. Siddiqh,

I was awaiting an email for the reply, but finally looked back here for an answer. All of the above has been done, MRI, Brain Scans, ent ear review, hearing test, all blood test. Sugar test etc. Nothing found.

When I first had the attack there was vomiting that was in late September. This attack which started on 11/5 had no nausea or vomiting and still doesn't. Just dizziness, some days worse than others. Today not so good. I will discontinue the peroxide, but is there anything else that I can use.

I have an appointment for physical therapy on Thursday I think to teach me the Epley manuever and hopefully other. I just wish there was some way to get rid of this. Any other suggestions welcome. Also, it does appear to be worse when I don't eat.

Brief Answer:
Sounds like BPPV. Needs one on one evaluation to confir. .

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

By now, you have almost done with all the related investigations. I kindly request you to undergo vestibular test like dix hall pike test to rule out BPPV (benign positional proximal vertigo, which is a cause of peripheral dizziness) by any ENT surgeon. This is a clinical finding, can only elicited by an ENT surgeon.

Meanwhile, please practice vestibular rehabilitation exercises, here with I am attaching a link of youtube video.

Thank you doctor;

I will try the Epley Maneuver and go to the Physical Therapy meeting on Thursday.

I do want to ask you however do you ever look at diet and digestion as a part of this problem. I have gone from doctor to doctor each on having only his/her answer. i.e. to an ear doctor who looked inside, then to a hearing doctor who took the hearing test, then a neurologist who didn't do much, and now to physical therapy and there's more that I've left out.

I joined this site to see if possibly there were some new and innovative approaches coming out of XXXXXXX or other countries.

I know you are an ENT but have you looked at any food related issues with this problem of vertigo? If not what type of doctor would be best to reach out to for something like that?

I have better and worse days and the worse seem to be related to what I eat.

Thanks for any suggestions. Anyone is suffering with this is pretty discouraged from what I've seen on line.

Thanks, much appreciation.

Brief Answer:
Nutritional deficiency can cause

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Most of the elderly people will have nutritional deficiencies (iron, calcium, folic acid). You need to correct them. Anyway, the diet should be- low-sodium, a high complex carbohydrate diet, omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils and flaxseed oils, and doses of niacin, multiple minerals, including magnesium, along with other B-complex vitamins, and vitamins C, A, and E.

At 68 years- balance diet, simple walking, vestibular exercises will help you in stopping your dizzy spells.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
