What Causes Very Low Blood Sugar Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 31 Mar 2016
Question: I am having my pacemaker battery replaced tomorrow. I have been told not to eat or drink anything after midnight tonight. The exception being my blood pressure medicine. I woke up this morning with my blood sugar at 53 and I was feeling the effects of how low it was. What can I do if it happens again in the morning?

Brief Answer:
Hypoglycemia

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Hypoglycemia effects can vary from one individual to another. Usually at less than 50 mg/dl of blood sugar, the symptoms of hypoglycemia start manifesting.

Avoid any anti diabetic drug such as glimepiride or insulin if you are diabetic and using any of these.

Keep a 6 hourly blood glucose monitoring record and check anytime in between if you experience hypo symptoms.

It would be preferable to have 25 % dextrose vials besides you if you can obtain them through a pharmacy. If the blood sugar drops below 50 , drink 2 , orally. Call a friend or family member and let them know about your situation as severe hypoglycemia can lead to alteration or loss of consciousness so someone should be available besides you to accompany you to the ER for possible need of IV hypertonic dextrose.

Please consult your doctor before taking any further course of action
