What Causes Voice Change In A Moderate Smoker With Swelling On Throat?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Mar 2015
Question: hello, I am a sales professional and my voice has always been low and deep. But recently my voice has become softer and really raspy. I do smoke, but im not a heavy smoker, and recently i just switched to an ecig in hopes it would help. Can getting a vaporizer/inhaler and breathing that once a day help? any suggestions? I can sometimes feel maybe a little swelling in the bottom of my throat and im constantly clearing my throat

I always assumed I have anemia, because I had a blood test taken once years ago and it showed I almost had a count of 12(whatever the units are) of red blood cells. It made sense to me as well that I could have much more white blood cells rather then Red, since it's impossible for me to get sick. However, I run out of breath fast, I'm always tired, and I don't feel hunger, the feeling, that others have. So I can end up just eating a lot but once in the day.

Brief Answer:
seemsto be laryngitis-needs voice rest

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having change of voice. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any cough ?
Is your change of voice associated with difficulty in swallowing ?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be due to laryngitis secondary to smoking or voice abuse (marketing)

As such, change of voice occurs due to voice abuse, smoking, infections (tuberculosis) and throat cancer. voice box cancer is uncommon in your age.

I suggest you to consult ent surgeon, get laryngoscopy (to see the deeper parts of throat and voice box lesions). Depending on the examination findings, treatment can be started.

Hemoglobin with score of 12 is borderline anemia, is not related to your voice change. of course, fatigue, weakness could be due to nutritional deficiencies (eating less).

Meantime, stop smoking, do steam inhalations, absolute voice rest and stop consuming freezer products (curd/ice creams).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

There is no cough, and no difficulty in swallowing. It is not likely to be voice abuse, I am very soft spoken, direct, and to the point. My sales process mostly consists of asking questions rather than marketing. smoking is usually 2-3 cigarettes a day. I never eat cold products, but I do have a large intake of caffeine. can be 5 cups of coffee a day.

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Caffeine can cause acid laryngitis. Do not worry, it not dangerous (cancer).

Kindly evaluate with laryngoscopy for the exact cause. Till then, follow my instructions.
