What Causes Vomiting After Taking Advil?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Hi I have been having a problem that seems to be getting more consistent.
At night, I experience what feels like gas in my upper right portion of my side that extends to my back. I take advil for the pain which results in vomiting. Usually I vomit once or twice-and the pain goes away.
Last week I had 2 episodes, where I did not take advil and the pain was more severe and more bouts of nausea. It never happens during the day-only at night- and usually lasts 1-2 hours before I can fall asleep (either because I stop vomiting or pain goes away). Some food triggers I have noticed but don't always result in these episodes are tomato sauces, spicey foods- any thoughts? I am 49 and have 2 children

Brief Answer:
Most probably Gastritis / Ulcer

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

To recapitulate: Female/ 49 - gas upper right abdomen to back - take Advil for pain - causes vomit - pain goes away after vomit - last 2 episodes a bit different - more severe pain and nausea when Advil was not taken - Happens only at night - lasts 1 to 2 hours - sleeps if the vomiting stops or pain goes away - trigger foods+ - any thoughts ...

My thoughts:
With an elucidate history, your problem is suggestive of gastritis or ulcer.

I would advise you the following:
Stop the trigger foods and beverages.
Stop Advil it is bad for stomach.
If possible to go for the Upper GI Endoscopy ASAP, because some medicines can alter the real picture very fast. This will allow you to get the real picture.

Start PPI / Ranidines, Antacids under the guidance of your Doctor.
Other tests of blood, urine and stool helps to rule out many problems when done on a routine basis.
Ultrasonography of the abdomen also helps in the same way, like looking for gall stones, pancreas, liver and so.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications if you feel there is a gap of communication.
