Brief Answer:
further studies needed
Detailed Answer:
It seems your husband needs to be seen by a doctor.
Shingles should not cause nausea (however the treatment may cause it). If he is still taking
acyclovir (or equivalent medication) that could be the cause of this nausea. If he is no longer taking anything for shingles, then other problems should be sought.
Ondansetron is a pretty strong medication against nausea, usually given to patients on
chemotherapy, so if that is not working, then he may have another problem.
Diabetics can get what is called "gastroparesis", which means the stomach gets a "neuropathy" and stops contracting appropriately and therefore food and liquids stay in the stomach for over 4 hours (as opposed to 1-2 hours normally). Therefore patient become nauseous and ondansetron would not help. Other stomach issues may be the source of the nausea as well, and therefore he would probably need an
upper endoscopy (camera to look into stomach) and a "gastric emptying study" (radiology test). he may also need to be evaluated by an ENT to make sure it is not an
inner ear or vestibular problem. Make sure
glucose remains very well controlled. I see that the A1C is 6, which is good, however that does not necessarily prevent gastroparesis.
