What Causes Vomiting, Diarrhea And Abdominal Discomfort?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Aug 2014
Question: I am having a colonoscopy in 2 weeks. About 3-weeks ago I had an episode where I had diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and vomited one time. Thought it was something I ate or a stomach virus going around. Ever since, my stools are soft or break up in water upon touch. I move my bowels once a day, but when I go, I get a sudden urge, fecal matter kind of explodes out of my body and then I am done. Stools sink to bottom of water however, they do not float. Went on omodium and probiotic - no change. I am 60 years old. No history of colon cancer. Had a clean colonoscopy in 2005. Any other possibilities besides colon cancer tumor? if it is colon cancer, is the fact that a tumor is narrowing the passageway, does this automatically indicate advanced stage of the disease? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It looks like infection of Gastrointestinal tract

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for posting in healthcaremagic.

It looks like you had infection of Gastrointestinal tract because of contaminated food or water.

Apart from Pre and Probiotic, I prescribe Antibiotics like Rifaximine and Metronidazole, a Proton pump inhibitor like Rabeprazole to my patients with similar complaints.

Your Colonoscopy may be normal or else simple Colitis, i.e.inflammation of Colon.
Before narrowing of Colon passage by cancerous growth, there will be complaints of Bleeding per rectum, distension of abdomen, Vomiting etc. Advance stage of the disease is described when the cancer cells have spread to other organs like Liver, bones etc.
Please do not eat outside food.
Nothing to worry.
IF you come back with Colonoscopy report, I will clarify further.

Wish you good health
Regards

I have had on and off bleeding bright red for last 9 months. Have hemorrhoids that constantly break. On Xarelto. Would you characterize my stools as I describe them as Diarrhea? Could a slow growth colon tumor show on and off low level bleeding up to 9 months?

Brief Answer:
Cancer has to be excluded

Detailed Answer:
Hi

One of the commonest cause of bleeding per rectum is haemorrhoids. Therefore the most likely cause of bleeding in your case could be haemorrhoids. However colon/rectum tumour should be excluded. In other words, though the symptoms do not indicate a serious cancerous condition, I would rely on colonoscopy results to exclude tumours. I am glad you are going to get one soon.

The description that you have given doesn't fit completely to diarrhoea. But, there is a bowel disturbance. I will wait for colonoscopy results.

If only haemorrhoids are diagnosed, it is better to get them removed.
Wish you good health.
Regards
