What Causes Vomiting, Diarrhea, Nausea And Flatulence?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Dec 2014
Question: I have what I think is gastroenteritis (vomiting last night for 5 hours along with very watery diarrhea). I haven't vomited today however I still feel nauseous and have diarrhea. I now have gas (burping and flatulence). I'm taking gravol but can I take tums as well? And I've tried to drink water but I may be dehydrated. At what point is this considered severe enough to visit the dr. I should also mention I have a heart condition.

Brief Answer:
Ensure good intake of water and electrolyte

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Majority of Acute Gastroenteritis are self limiting. Principle of management is simple
1. Ensure adequate intake of water and electrolyte to prevent dehydration : Drinking just plain water may cause sense of weakness due to electrolyte disturbance

2. Symptomatic control of symptoms : Control of Nausea /vomiting /pain in abdomen

3. Probiotic

As your vomiting has subsided, it is very much reassuring. Continue taking Gravol which is antiemtic. You can also consider adding antacid like Tums.

If you notice any of the following then do consult your physician
1. Severe pain in abdomen
2. Blood in stools
3. Signs of Dehydration : Dry oral mucosa , decreased urine output
4. If vomiting reappears in spite of taking antiemtic

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
