What Causes Vomiting In An Infant After Consuming ORS And Formula Milk?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 May 2016
Question: My 11 month old daughter is throwing up since morning after every feed. The vomiting occurs within 5 mins of formula or Ors solution. Seems she has immense stomach pain with churning that occurs before vomiting. What should I do?

I am giving her ONDEM and CYCLOPAM. When can she start having formula? I worry that she may dehydrate. She seems hungry but throws up immediately all of her intake.

How long should I wait before offering any milk after giving the medication. There hasn't been a single feed that she has not brought out fully. She appears really hungry.

Brief Answer:
Looks like prodrome of viral diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - You can use cerelac...any flavour will do. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

You can start feeding after 30 minutes.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Thank you. However I don't see diarrhea yet. Since she's vomiting everything she takes in, urine flow is quite low.

Is there something I can give that will allow her to hold the intake for a while. Even now she brought out everything she drank 15 mins ago.

Brief Answer:
Ondem is the best...please continue same treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi...for this condition Ondem is the best drug. Please continue the same.

Diarrhea might start...if so be on look out for dehydration signs I suggested.

Thank you so much. One final question.

Would you please recommend the dosage and frequency of the ondem syrup?

She is 10.5 kg and I am giving 4 ml every 6 hours. How about cyclopam dosage as well?
