What Causes Vomiting Post Intake Of Formula Milk?
My boy bay is 1 month 3 days old. Mother's milt is insufficient, so we tried Nan pro 1 (100ml - 3 scoops) yesterday. But he starts vomiting after feed. After that we didn't give it, only bf. We went to doctor today morning, he prescribed domstal suspension - 0.5ml. But we didn't tell doctor that we had given formula. What domstal will do?? We had given 2 dosages (morning & night) till now. His stool is sticky, light yellowish & some thick yellowish mixed colour. We are worried, but we can see some better improvement than before. Need your advice & suggestions.
Breast milk is the best for the baby
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Let me emphasize on the fact that breast milk is the best possible milk for a baby and there can be no alternatives for the same. Most formula milks are cow milk based and hence difficult to digest. That is why the baby is throwing up. Domstal reduces the tendency of vomiting but the underlying problem remains. Moreover formula milks make the child more prone to complications and infections. Mother's breast milk is produced on the demand of the baby. Hungrier the baby, more vigorous is the suck. More is the suck, more is the amount of breast milk produced. Giving formula automatically reduces the demand of the baby and thereby the production of breast milk. All you need to do is to switch back to exclusive breast feeding and the production will increase automatically. All you need to do is to monitor the urine output. If the frequency is more than 6 times in 24 hours, you would know that the amount of feeding is adequate. If the amount of passage of urine is less or if the child is lethargic you would need to take the child to a doctor without delay.
For a baby of this age, it is normal to pass stool several times a day or even after each feed. Alternatively the child may pass stool once in 10 days and that is normal too. Unless the stool is hard and pellet like, you need not grow concerned. It is also normal to pass green stool or a combination of yellow stool. The green colour occurs due to rapid transit through large intestine where the bile pigments do not get adequate time to convert to the yellow colour of stool. It is OK for some mucus to be there in the stool.
Breast milk also takes care of immunity against common ailments like cough and cold, and diarrhea. So, automatically your worries would be reduced. For a baby of this age, it is normal to pass stool several times a day or even after each feed. Alternatively the child may pass stool once in 10 days and that is normal too. Unless the stool is hard and pellet like, you need not grow concerned. You need not use suppositories but in case you use, it would not be harmful.
You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air taken in would escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe.

Now vomiting stopped, but he is facing with watery stools. Today morning 12.30 AM we went to doctor, he prescribed Bifilac Oral Suspension (1ml-1ml-1ml), ORS & advices to stop any formula feed. We had given Bifilac @ 2.15AM, 8.30AM, 1.00PM & ORS some time. Baby is having mother feeding, active & crying in demand of milk. Water from his eyes while crying. Still his stool is watery & Yellowish stuff after every feed & in between. Today he had loose motion more than 12 times. Passed urine 2 times - first few quantity @ 8.00AM, 2nd time normal @ 5.30PM. After how many Bifilac dosages or days this will get sort out & he would become normal??? Please give some suggestions on Mother's diet that milk production will be sufficient as per baby demand!!! As well as baby will get well soon.
Breast milk is the best option.

Thanks for writing back. You need not worry about the loose stools. You may give Bifilac but continue breast feeding. That is the mainstay of treatment. It will take a few days for the loose stools to stop. Monitor the urine output. If the frequency is lesser than 6-8 hours in 24 hours you need to add ORS (oral rehydration solution) as well.
The mother needs to drink a glass of milk a couple of times a day. Top feeds need to be avoided as they would reduce the hunger and thereby the sucking of the baby and hence would adversely affect milk production.
Let me know if I could help further.
