What Causes Watery Painful Eye Along With Light Sensitivity?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: On Wednesday I went to an eye doctor because my eye was in a lot of pain, watering, light sensitive etc. He put drops in my eye to dilate it and also drops to "freeze" it so that I would be out pain during the examination. He said I had small scratches on my cornea and sores (bumps) on the undersides of my eyelids. He and put me on tobradex eye ointment 3x a day (doesn't say for how long). The pain has subsided and I am gaining some distance vision back. However, while I am not tearing in sunlight, I am still sensitive and the most concerning for me is that my pupil is dilated still. Could this be a side effect to the medication? Or can dilating drops last this long? My near vision is now very blurry and was not beforehand, but I read the dilating drops can do this. I am leaving for a cruise with my family tomorrow. The eye doctor is not open for answers so I am hoping someone can provide me with some information on why my eye is still dilated and what I should do to help bring the dilation back down to normal size. I'm also uncertain of how long to take the Tobradex. Thank-you.

Brief Answer:
dilation due to eye drops

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You recently had corneal abrasions and irritation of the eyelids. The dilating eye drops have left you with persistent dilation. This will take some time to reverse though usually they would be back to normal by now. I would recommend staying out of the sunlight for an additional 1-2 days. I also think you can safely go on your cruise.

The antibiotic eye ointment is also making your eye blurry and you should stop it tomorrow. If you have any problems with your eyes during the cruise you can still see the doctor on board but i believe you should have no troubles

In summary
1. dilating solution still affecting your dilation\
2. will resolve soon
3. eye ointment causing blurred vision
4. stop eye ointment tomorrow
5. See on board doctor if eye persists
