Question: I have been taking a 7 day course of augmentin for UTI. Along with that course was also taking florastor. To keep the urine alkaline I was using 1/2 tsp baking soda in water 6 times a day for six days. Finished the augmentin on Sunday April 17. On thursday April 21 in the evening began having watery bms with undigested food. No Pain fever or any other symptoms other than a constant hungry feeling. Thought I now had too little stomach acid. Called dr. nurse told me to let it run its course. Friday Saturday Sunday- 3. watery bms in the morning 3 in the evening Only other symptoms burning anus and hemorrhoid when going. Between morning and evening I felt great. Went on a trip over the weekend. Pretty painful when defecating but just in the anal region. When the 3 bms were finished life was good. Still had the constant hungry feeling though. This was relieved by sipping 1 TBS apple cider vinegar in 16 oz water with my BRAT meals. Stopped vinegar Monday thinking it added to the burning anal area- then hungry feeling returned. Called doc on Monday. Relayed info to nurse who relayed to doc who relayed to nurse and back to me. He is treating this as though it is c dif. Prescribed flagyl. Monday evening my bowels began firming up so didnot take the med. Tuesday morning bowels semi firm at first then loose later in the day when the 3 bms came in the late afternoon rather than the evening. Hungry feeling still there so tuesday night began vinegar again. have been sleeping fine all this time exceptgetting up to urinate because of all the water I've been drinking. Began eating according to The Inside Tract by XXXXXXX Mullins of Johns XXXXXXX How could I have c dif if I feel fine. I am reluctant to take antibiotic on this evidence. I think I messed up my acid balance with the baking soda.

Brief Answer:
Could be Collitis and/or Superinfection

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in

The elaborate description points out to two possibilities :

1] Either you have had an antibiotic induced superinfection of GI track or
2] It is collitis

If you are keen on confirming the diagnosis you need to go for a stool culture and come to a conclusive impression

It can be C Dif or any other organism but can be confirmed by culture only

In our setup we start with a probiotic twice a day and the stool is sent for culture simultaneously - if it is superinfection it should start responding in 48 hours, anyway a good number of patients with collitis also improve with probiotics alone

If after 48 hours there is no response the culture report would have arrived and you can start the specific antibiotic as per the sensitivity

Hope this helps
