Posted on Tue, 24 Jun 2014
Question: For some time now i have been having a very hard time staying awake during the day. I have a long drive to and from work everyday and find myself dozing off quite often and catching myself, it is becoming a very serious problem. I feel that i get a sufficient amount of sleep about 7 hours. Is there something else that i can do besides try and get more sleep. It has begun to affect my work and my relationship as well.

Brief Answer:
Consider medical problems first and then stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing into us.

I have read through your query in details.
You are getting an adequate amount of sleep during the night. It I important to first evaluate for any medical conditions causing you to feel tired and weak. These may include anemia, thyroid disorders and nutritional deficiency states. Once it is clear that you do not have any medical condition, then you might need to get evaluated to know if you are affected by stress and anxiety at work or at home or if you are experiencing mood problems.

As you are most affected by dozing off at times, it is important that you take measures o maintain a level of alertness while doing important work at office or driving. This can be achieved by taking a short 10 to 15 minutes power nap just after lunch and take care that you do not sleep any longer during the day. This will keep you fresh in the afternoon hours. Just before driving back home you may have a cup of coffee to keep yourself alert during the drive.

Also please to have healthy meals on time and have a regular fitness plan.

Hope our query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
