Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: Hi, I had Gastric bypass in Aug of 2001. I lost all the weight I needed and was fit and trim until 2 yrs ago. I lost 106 LBS. and regained 33 LBS back and not sure why. I work out and I'm a nurse and a vegetarian. Could it be too many carbs?

Brief Answer:
Weight gain- taking more calories then you spend.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.

I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

As you maybe know- the body results in weight gain when the calories you eat are more then the calories you spend. You may calculate online the calories that you body spends without doing nothing (Basal metabolism). By knowing the calories that you spend during a certain activity you can know how much weight you lose. A usage of 3500 calories will result in 1 kg of weight loss.

The metabolism slows down gradually because of the age. It is more difficult to lose weight or to control it with the time.

If you have already done this, and have been careful with the diet exercising, then you should check the levels of the hormones that affect the metabolism. So, we need first to make sure that the hormonal levels are normal...since we cannot make an action to fasten the metabolism that its decreased by age, we surely can do something to improve it, if it is affected by a pathology.

If I was your caring doctor, my recommandation would be to check:
-- TSH (gives us an idea how the thyroid gland its working)
-- Fasting sugar (Glicemia) and Glicemia 2 hours after food.

Maybe you have done these labs. If that is the case, and if you need consultation about the results, let me have a look and I will be happy to help.

These are my thoughts. I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have other concerns or if you need more clarifications.

Regards,
Dr. Papaqako
